IBA attends Assembly of States Parties in New York
9 Dec 2011
The IBA ICC Programme is represented during the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) tenth annual session by IBA Programme Manager, Lorraine Smith van Lin. The IBA representative will attend plenary sessions of the Assembly as an observer together with other civil society organisations where issues concerning the ICC's budget and important resolutions of the Assembly will be decided. The IBA will also participate in side events and bilateral meetings during the ASP.
Importantly, given that elections of six judges are scheduled during this session of the Assembly, the IBA representative will distribute the IBAHRI Resolution and background document on the values pertaining to judicial appointments to international criminal courts and tribunals to delegates attending the ASP.
Concerning the ASP, Ms Smith van Lin said, 'This 10th session of the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC will be critically important for the Court at this time. Delegates will have to make tough decisions concerning the Court's budget and elect six new judges and a new Prosecutor. These decisions are crucial as the level of resources and the quality of leadership are key to the Court's fulfilment of its mandate'.
