Cyril Shroff, April 2013

In April 2013, the IBA hosted a live webcast and Q&A with Cyril Shroff, Managing Partner at one of India’s leading law firms, Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co (AMSS) in Mumbai.After qualifying in 1982, Cyril Shroff joined AMSS as an intern, working his way up through the firm to his current position of Managing Partner. Over his 30-year career he has seen the development of much of India’s corporate law and the growth of India into an Asian superpower.

Shroff shared insights on such issues as the Indian economy, and its place as part of the BRICS nations; the legal profession in India and its liberalisation; challenges, including governance issues and bureaucracy; and new developments in regulation, tax and competition law. The interview was conducted by award-winning former CNN journalist, Todd Benjamin.

Women in the law, April 2012

The IBA held an expert panel discussion on women in the law on 26 April, chaired by BBC broadcaster Fi Glover. The panel comprised four lawyers at the very top of the profession: Margaret Cole, former managing director of the UK Financial Services Authority’s Conduct Business Unit [left]; Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, leading barrister and human rights expert; Elizabeth Barrett, Slaughter and May partner and former head of litigation; and Katie Ghose, chief executive of the Electoral Reform Society and former director of the British Institute of Human Rights.

Webcast interview with Chris Saul, Senior Partner, Slaughter and May, 13 March 2012

On Tuesday 13 March the IBA conducted a webcast interview and Q&A with Chris Saul, Senior Partner at Magic Circle law firm Slaughter and May. Saul has spent 35 years at the firm which is regularly recognised as the most profitable in the City. The firm frequently advises the most sought-after clients in the corporate and banking spheres, as well as the Treasury. His position makes him extremely well-placed to discuss such matters as the continuing global financial crisis, particularly in the Eurozone, and the challenges it presents for international law firms.

 
 Webcast interview with Kalidou Gadio, General Counsel, African Development Bank, 13 February 2012  

In the IBA's first webcast interview of 2012, African Development Bank General Counsel Kalidou Gadio discussed efforts to promote sustainable growth in the continent, and critical links between law and development. Mr Gadio also explained projects such as the African Legal Support Facility, addressing the problem of vulture funds. Mr Gadio was interviewed by international broadcast journalist Zeinab Badawi.

The IBA hosted an interview and Q&A session on Monday 3 October with Hugh Verrier, Chairman of White & Case. Mr Verrier directs the firm's operations and practices around the world. Topics included re-shaping law firm strategy and undertaking business in emerging markets. The interview was conducted by award-winning former CNN journalist Todd Benjamin.

Webcast interview with the OECD's Nicola Bonucci, August 2011

The IBA's hosted a webcast interview on Wednesday 31 August with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Director for Legal Affairs, Nicola Bonucci. Topics included finance and regulatory reform, corporate governance and anti-corruption initiatives.

The OECD's mission is ‘to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world’. In the midst of the international financial crisis which has precipitated widespread austerity measures, the OECD’s role has perhaps never been more significant.

The IBA held a webcast interview and Q&A with Peter Rees QC, Legal Director, Royal Dutch Shell, on Tuesday 24 May.  Topics covered included challenges facing the energy sector; the changing business of Royal Dutch Shell; the increasingly powerful role of  General Counsel; and corporate social responsibility.

Webcast interview with Professor Mark Pieth, December 2010 - Anti-corruption

The IBA hosted a live webcast interview and Q&A session with Professor Mark Pieth, Chair of the OECD Working Group on Bribery in International Business Transactions. Professor Pieth was a compelling choice for the interview as the IBA develops its Anti-Corruption Strategy for the Legal Profession alongside the OECD and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Mark Malloch Brown, former UN Deputy Secretary-General and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, and Minister of State in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, took part in the IBA's webcast interview on 20 November 2012.

Mark Malloch Brown shared his considerable experience in foreign affairs, particularly in Africa and Asia, during this webcast. He covered topics such as development and globalisation, his background working in international institutions such as the UN and the World Bank.

Judge Buergenthal is currently serving at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
