IBAHRI joint NGO statement on human rights in Myanmar submitted to the 34th Session of the Human Rights Council

On 13 March 2017, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) joined the International Commission of Jurists and Lawyers' Rights Watch Canada to deliver a statement to the 34th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council as part of an Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.

The statement welcomed a recommendation to establish an international, independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate the reported persecution of Rohingya and other minorities in Rakhine State, stating that previous national investigation commissions have not been impartial or independent.

The statement further calls for an effective investigation into the recent killing of U Ko Ni, a prominent Myanmarese lawyer.
