Human rights in the administration of justice

The IBAHRI, together with the United Nations (UN) has produced a training manual, for judges, prosecutors and lawyers: Human Rights in the Administration of Justice. The Manunal aims to provide a comprehensive core curriculum on international human rights standards for legal professionals and has been used in trainings and workshops accross the world. International criminal law

The IBAHRI has produced a Manual on international criminal law, published in June 2010, it aims to facilitate understanding of the scope of international criminal law, particularly its relation to human rights. Click here to read more on the Manual and to download it in English / French

Human rights and the role of parliaments

The IBAHRI, as part of The Westminster Consortium (TWC) has produced a handbook for parliamentary members and staff, on human rights and the role of parliaments and has conducted training in 5 TWC countries. Combating torture 

The IBAHRI is undertaking a long-term project in Brazil, aimed at combating torture. Following the production of a training manual for judges and lawyers the IBAHRI implemented trainings across six Brazilian states. Tunisia judicial human rights training, 2012-2013
The IBAHRI has partnered with the International Legal Assistance Consortium (ILAC) and CEELI Institute to undertake a series of workshops, aiming to train the majority of Tunisian judges on human rights and judging in a democratic society.
 

Angola human rights training, 2012
At the end of March 2012 the IBAHRI held two four-day training sessions on international human rights law for 70 members of the Angolan judiciary, prosecutors and lawyers.
 

Combating torture in Brazil, 2011 - on-going
The IBAHRI has launched a major project in Brazil funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The project comprises the development of a Combating Torture Manual for judges, prosecutors and lawyers in Brazil, the implementation of trainings in six different states and the development of legal education curricula for use by justice institutions.
 

Parliamentary training, 2010 - 2011
Since becoming part of The Westminster Consortium (TWC) in 2009, the IBAHRI has committed to run courses focusing on the role of parliaments in upholding the rule of law and the implementation of constitutional and human rights obligations.
 

Rwanda international criminal law training, 2011
The IBAHRI training workshop, organised in collaboration with the Kigali Bar Association, offered 60 lawyers the opportunity to increase their knowledge of international criminal law, including the definition of international crimes, individual criminal responsibility, protection of victims and witnesses and victims’ participation in the proceedings, rights of the defence and prosecution before domestic tribunals.
 

Sudan international criminal law training, 2011
The IBAHRI, in partnership with the Human Rights and Social Justice Research Centre (HRSJ) at London Metropolitan University, conducted training on human rights and international criminal law for members of the Darfur Bar Association.
 

DRC legal workshops, 2010 - 2011
The IBAHRI Legal Specialist organised four workshops during his mandate with the Lubumbashi Bar Association, focused on legal aid and pro bono work, business and human rights, corruption and international criminal law.
 

Human rights training for judges, prosecutors and public defenders in Colombia, 2010
To mark the launch of the Spanish translation of the IBAHRI manual, Human Rights in the Administration of Justice: A Manual for Judges, Prosecutors and Lawyers, the IBAHRI hosted two workshops focussing on the independence of the legal profession and due process guarantees in Colombia.
 

Iraq human rights training, 2006 - 2009
The IBAHRI, with funding from the UK Department for International Development (DFID), ran training programmes for Iraqi lawyers, judges and prosecutors in international human rights law.
 

Libya human rights training, 2009
The IBAHRI carried out human rights training for lawyers, journalists, academics, medical professionals and human rights activists, at the al-Fateh University, Tripoli, across 2009.
 

Legal Aid Clinics Workshops, 2008 & 2009
The IBAHRI conducted a second workshop on legal clinics and legal aid in Tehran in April 2009, following the success of the Conference on Legal Aid and Clinical Legal Education in November 2008.
 

Universal legal framework against terrorism, 2006 - 2007
The IBA worked with the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime to organise training workshops on the universal legal framework against terrorism and its application. Training took place with participants from all regions of Iraq.
 

Iraq humanitarian law training, 2004 - 2007
From July 2004 to October 2007 the IBAHRI carried out legal training in the field of international humanitarian law for judges and prosecutors who may be involved in the conduct of trials of people charged with crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide under international criminal law in Iraq’s criminal courts.
 

Colombia human rights training, 2006
In June 2006, the IBAHRI conducted a series of training workshops in collaboration with the British Embassy in Colombia on the rule of law and the practical implementation of fair trial standards.
 

Mexico combating torture training, 2006
In February 2006 the IBAHRI held a series of training workshops on combating torture in Mexico, for judges, lawyers and prosecutors.
 

Iraqi Higher Tribunal training, 2005
In February, March and August 2005 the IBAHRI began training sessions for high-ranking judges and prosecutors from the Iraqi Higher Tribunal (IHT) on international criminal law and war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
