Maritime and Transport Law Committee home

The Maritime and Transport Law Committee is one of the oldest and most established committees of the IBA with more than 800 members worldwide. The committee enables maritime law professionals to meet, create connections and discuss the most current legal issues in maritime and transport law.

The committee organises sessions for the IBA's Annual Conference and holds frequent seminars. Strong links have been established with other leading maritime organisations, such as Comite Maritime International and the International Maritime Organization Legal Council.

  The appearance of five suspected Somali pirates in court in the Netherlands this week has focused attention on the legal challenges posed by 21st-century piracy.

This year the Maritime and Aviation Law Section will again award a scholarship to a young lawyer who wishes to participate in the IBA Annual Conference, but may find financial difficulties in doing so. The scholarship award for 2009 includes the following:

• Free registration for the IBA 2009 Annual Conference, 4-9 October 2009, Madrid, Spain.
• A contribution towards travel costs to the conference.
• A contribution towards accommodation costs while attending the conference.
• Two year's free membership of the IBA, LPD and PPID including membership of one committee within the awarding section and one free PPID constituent.
• A waiver of either the next IBA Annual Conference registration fee or the registration fee of one of the chosen committees' specialist conferences in 2010.
• Free membership of the Scholarship Alumni Group.
