The IBAHRI has published a new thematic report, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics at the UPR , giving focus to the protection of LGBTI rights at an international level. The report gives a revealing overview of the role played by the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in shaping the protection of LGBTI rights. The UPR itself, created in 2006 by the United Nations Human Rights Council, is a unique peer-to-peer assessment of all 193 UN states’ human rights performances.

Ongoing obscurity surrounding the death of a prominent human rights lawyer in Turkey in November continues to raise questions about the country’s ability to uphold the rule of law. A Kurdish lawyer and chairman of the Diyarbakir Bar Association, Tahir Elci was shot dead on November 28 during a press conference in Turkey’s south-eastern city of Diyarbakir. He had been making an appeal for peace in the city, which has been the scene of months of violent clashes.

News Release: Friday 01 April 2016. The International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) welcomes the release of prominent human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev from prison. The Azerbaijan’s Supreme Court also decided on 28 March 2016, to convert the sentence from seven-and-a-half years’ imprisonment to a five-year suspended sentence. However, the criminal convictions remain, under conditional release. The IBAHRI calls on Azerbaijan’s authorities to drop all charges against him.

News Release: Friday 27 May 2016. The International Bar Association (IBA), in partnership with the Basel Institute on Governance, today published the results of a global survey that shows bribery and undue political influence are the two most frequently reported forms of corruption observed in judicial systems.

The survey is part of the IBA Judicial Integrity Initiative (JII), a project launched by IBA President David W Rivkin in January 2015 aimed at combating judicial corruption.

On 28 May 2016, the IBA Council, the organisation’s governing body, voted unanimously to adopt the IBA Practical Guide on Business and Human Rights for Business Lawyers (Practical Guide) during its mid-year meeting in Barcelona. As a service to lawyers everywhere the guide is available to download from the IBA website.

The slaying of Bilal Anwar Kasi, President of the Balochistan Bar Association, and the targeted mass murder of lawyers gathered at Sandeman Civil Hospital in Quetta, Pakistan, on Monday 8 August to mourn their colleague’s death, are condemned outright by the International Bar Association (IBA).

On 30 August 2016, the Presidency of the International Criminal Court (ICC) made public an important decision re-affirming the Court’s positive obligation to provide an effective right to family visits for ICC detainees, including by providing funding for such visits. In the same decision, the Presidency expressed concern that the Trust Fund for Family Visits ‘has reached a critically low level’.
