Guantanamo Bay, 2009During 2008 the IBAHRI conducted indepth research into issues surrounding detention and interrogation in Guantanamo Bay during the USA’s ‘war on terror’, releasing papers on legal status of detainees, detention and trial, extraordinary renditions, future of guatanamo bar and case studies from United Kingdom, Spain, Russia, Kenya, Morocco and Indonesia.

IBAHRI concerned that death threats against Mexican lawyer, Alba Cruz, remain uninvestigated, 2010 On 3 June 2010 the IBAHRI issued a news release expressing concern that death threats and physical attacks against the lawyer Alba Gabriela Cruz Ramos (Alba Cruz), and seven of her colleagues, have not been investigated by the Mexican authorities in accordance with the precautionary measures granted by the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR).

IBAHRI / Instituto Innovare Award, 2010The IBAHRI was delighted to team up with prestigious Brazilian organisation, Instituto Innovare, to present an inaugural award for improving access to justice for prisoners. The winner was Judge Erivaldo Santos of the National Justice Council (Conselho Nacional de Justica) whose ‘New Start’ Programme beat 34 other applicants from all over the country for the prestigious award.

Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe: a discussion on the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law, 2011In October 2011 the IBAHRI hosted a side event at the Human Rights’ Council Universal Periodic Review. The event focused on the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law in Venezuela, Syria and Zimbabwe, three countries that were reviewed during the current Twelfth Session of the Human Rights Council’s UPR (3-14 October 2011) and where the IBAHRI has conducted missions in 2011.

Bolivia fact-finding mission 2006In 2006 the IBAHRI undertook a fact-finding mission to Bolivia to investigate the growing concern over threats to the independence of the judiciary. Following the mission the IBAHRI released a report containing findings and recommendations.

Brazil fact-finding mission, 2009In 2009, the IBAHRI conducted a fact-finding mission to Brazil, focusing on the Brazilian criminal justice sector, and in particular on access to justice in pre-trial detention. A report subsequent to the mission was released in February 2010.

Combating torture in Brazil, 2011 - on-goingThe IBAHRI has launched a major project in Brazil funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The project comprises the development of a Combating Torture Manual for judges, prosecutors and lawyers in Brazil, the implementation of trainings in six different states and the development of legal education curricula for use by justice institutions.

Human rights training for judges, prosecutors and public defenders in Colombia, 2010 To mark the launch of the Spanish translation of the IBAHRI manual, Human Rights in the Administration of Justice: A Manual for Judges, Prosecutors and Lawyers, the IBAHRI hosted two workshops focussing on the independence of the legal profession and due process guarantees in Colombia.
