We are pleased to provide guidelines for those interested in submitting a grant application to the International Bar Association Foundation, Inc.

OVERVIEW AND GUIDELINES

What We Fund:

The Foundation will consider requests that fall within our established or developing programming areas as listed below.  To be eligible for a grant, the organization, institution, or entity, as well as the purpose of the proposed project, must qualify under the regulations of the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) organization (not-for-profit).  Generally, the Foundation makes grants in the USD $2,000 - $10,000 range.

Programming areas:

  • Rule of law and the administration of justice
  • Legal education and continuing legal education
  • Legal services.

We typically consider requests from the following entities:

  • IBA Divisions, Committees, task forces, institutes, Fora and specialist groups
  • IBA national and city bar member organizations
  • Regional and local bar associations
  • Law schools
  • Legal services organizations
  • Judicial organizations
  • International and national non-profits working on law-related projects.

What We Don't Fund:

The Foundation does not typically make loans and does not provide grants for:

  • Capital purposes (purchasing, remodeling or furnishing of facilities and equipment) unless these are part of a program initiative
  • Budget line items classified as indirect, overhead, or general administrative costs
  • Endowments or development campaigns
  • Fundraising costs, particularly where a professional fundraiser is involved
  • Religious programs
  • Lobbying or political purposes
  • Travel

In addition, the Foundation typically does not fund scholarships or other grants benefiting one or a few individuals.  Research is funded only as part of a broader program.

The Foundation is particularly interested in funding programs and activities that will lead to systemic improvement and/or will provide tangible products that can be replicated and shared with larger audiences.

Vice President for Grant Administration
International Bar Association Foundation, Inc
E-mail:  mfbe@aol.com,

Our goal is to give prompt consideration to all applications.  We will first acknowledge receipt of your application.  If the Foundation determines that it is unlikely that your proposal would be funded, we will notify you as soon as possible.  If your proposed project falls within the Foundation's programming areas and guidelines and we believe that your project might qualify for a grant, we will contact you to discuss any additional information that we will require in order to make a final decision.

Deadlines
While the Foundation accepts applications throughout the year, we recommend that for best consideration, applicants should apply by submitting materials to both mfbe@aol.com, and

• by June 1 for consideration at the fall meeting of the Foundation (generally held in September or October) or
• by February 1 for consideration at the spring meeting of the Foundation (generally held in late May or early June).

Should the Foundation determine that your project might qualify for a grant, this will provide approximately two months for any additional information to be submitted.
