BIC membership
Background
The Bar Issues Commission's by-laws provide for Member Organisations who have paid their subscription to the Association to appoint up to three Members of the BIC free of charge. We encourage Member Organisations to ensure there is continuity in those persons appointed and that those persons have relevant experience with the Member Organisation. These members are treated as IBA members and receive member benefits.
If you have not done so, please download, complete and return the annual membership form for 2010 in order to keep records up to date.
Positions
Permanent BIC Liaison Officer
A full time senior executive within the bar association who will be the key liaison person who handles the majority of your IBA and BIC correspondence (eg, receiving and arranging payment of your fees; receipt and distribution of BIC e-newsletters, information on conferences, policy committee projects etc). This contact will also be invited to conferences and bar executive meetings. We appreciate that for smaller associations, it may not be a full time executive who takes on this role.
President
The president of your association is entitled to attend and vote at all IBA Council meetings and BIC events. We will also want to invite the president to the annual bar leaders conference and any other events which are relevant to the president of your association.
IBA Councillor
Your third BIC representative should be an officer or senior executive who can regularly attend and vote at Council meetings. At your request we will be able to mail the Council agenda directly to an address provided by this person, rather than to the main mailing address of the bar association.
Membership of Public and Professional Interest Division (PPID) committees and other entities
In accordance with the PPID by-laws, each Member Organisation which has paid its subscription to the Association for the current year may nominate, free of charge, one Member of such committees and other entities of the division as may be agreed by the Council of the division. As members of these committees your representatives will receive any current newsletters and information about what the committee is doing.
