The period termed ‘art deco’ manifested itself roughly from 1920-1939. As with many other art movements, even work of today is still being influenced by the past.

Join your guide as we admire the soaring exteriors and opulent interiors of some of Chicago’s most magnificent Art Deco skyscrapers. You’ll learn about the origins of this short-lived but lively architectural style; the difference between Jazz Deco, Classical Deco and Streamlined Deco and the important role that Chicago played in the international Art Deco movement.

He described his ‘organic architecture’ as one that ‘proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man and his circumstances as they both change’. As a pioneer whose ideas were well ahead of his time, Wright had to fight for acceptance of every new design.

Trace the development of the Prairie Style in Oak Park and River Forest, amid the world’s highest concentration of Wright buildings. Exteriors of more than 25 houses will be explained from the bus and in guided walks through three neighborhoods. Follow Wright’s career from 1889 to 1913, when his original architectural concepts were changing the face of the American family home.

M  Mackinac Island - 3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

US$1,160 per person, based on double occupancy

M1 Pre-Conference Tour
M2 Post-Conference Tour

Mackinac Island is the truly ‘all natural’ theme park of America. Limited to transportation by horse and cart, bicycle or foot, surrounded by water, it has escaped the vast changes of time. Its real Victorian image is preserved and enhanced by a small population of 500 permanent residents and scores of summer residents, maintaining bluff cottages in their original state.

Families, especially children, love their relatively new found ‘mobility’, exploring the historic, natural beauty of Mackinac Island State Park, honoured by National Geographic as being one of the ten finest in America.
Guests will enjoy the ambience of the Grand Hotel. Built in 1887, the hotel boasts 385 guest rooms with no two rooms decorated the same. At 660 feet, the Grand Hotel’s front porch is the world’s longest. It takes 500,000 gallons of water to fill the hotel’s swimming pool, named for actress Esther Williams, who starred in the 1949 movie This Time for Keeps, filmed at the Grand Hotel. In addition to numerous Hollywood stars, five US Presidents have visited the Grand Hotel: Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Gerald Ford,
George H W Bush and Bill Clinton.

The grounds at the Grand are magnificent. The Mackinac Bridge, visible from the hotel, was opened in 1957 and joins Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. At 8,614 feet, it is the longest suspension bridge in North America. The Grand Hotel’s front porch flowers include 2,500 geraniums in 260 planting boxes. Over one tonne of bulbs are planted in the fall each year, including 25,000 tulips and 15,000 daffodils. More than 125,000 bedding plants (annuals) are used to create the gardens throughout the hotel grounds. Guests will have free time to enjoy their stay in this beautiful setting.

Included: Three days and two nights at the Grand Hotel, a full breakfast and five-course dinner each night, airfare from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, and airport transfer (via ferry).
Transfer to/from Chicago hotel, not included.
