A webinar presented by the IBA Legal Policy & Research Unit, supported by the IBA Business Human Rights Committee and the IBA Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law Section

The outcomes of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP29 in Azerbaijan this November will set a critical foundation for future international action on the climate crisis. Recognised as the ‘Finance COP’, this conference is where countries will come together to decide on a new global goal on climate finance. It’s also where countries will signal their intentions to submit ambitious new Nationally Determined Contributions due next year.

This webinar will bring together legal experts to explore key priorities on the agenda at COP29, including climate finance and the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG), loss and damage, mitigation and adaptation priorities, and the importance of collaborative networks (including collaboration between the COP29 and COP30 Brazil presidencies).

COP outcomes send critical investment and market signals to the public and private sector alike: how can we expect the outcomes of COP29 to affect legal practice?

Taking place on the same day as the US election, the webinar will also consider the political and legal landscape that will have an impact on the success or otherwise of the COP negotiations, in addition to the trajectory and timeline for action. What is the role of the law in this uncertain period and how can lawyers remain proactive and engaged?
