Women, law and empowerment: securing equal rights for women in the workplace

Despite the findings of a 2006 Accenture survey stating that ‘gender is no longer believed to be a career limiting factor’, many barriers preventing women from breaking through the ‘glass ceiling’ remain firmly in place. In the western world, claims most often relate to the pay gap between men and women, however in their chapter on Women, Law and Empowerment, Shaheen Ali and Ayesha Shahid examine the problems encountered by women in the workplace in Pakistan, who are faced with a different set of obstacles.
