Cambodia
Training
From 18 – 22 July 2008, the IBAHRI conducted a second highly successful training programme in Cambodia.
The training addressed crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide trials and provided an in-depth review of international criminal law relevant to the Extraordinary Chambers of the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Fifty young Cambodian practicing lawyers were invited to take part, including some lawyers who now work within the ECCC and some who could not attend a similar training programme conducted by the IBAHRI last year. There was an excellent level of participation in all sessions and good representation from a cross section of Cambodian society.
Needs assessment
A needs assessment for the development of an international criminal law training manual was also carried out during the training in Phnom Penh. Discussions within the training, key meetings with partners involved in Cambodia and the ECCC and the region, evaluation sessions at the end of the training and a review of all existing training materials will provide input into the IBAHRI’s development of a comprehensive and international training manual in the coming months.
The programme built on training conducted in 2007 in partnership with the Defence Office of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
Press release: IBA forced to cancel training in Cambodia, November 2006
