Election of presiding judge in Trial Chamber I and request for submissions on the subjects that require early determination
On 18 July 2007, the Judges of the Trial Chamber set out preliminary proposals detailing a non-exhaustive list of matters requiring early consideration before the commencement of the trial, and suggested dates for the filing of submissions on those issues and any hearings. They encouraged the parties to consult and achieve consensus amongst themselves, and instructed the Registrar to inform only those victims who had been granted victim status before the Pre-Trial Chamber of the timetable.
The preliminary list of issues and timetable were listed as follows:
1) Written submissions to be filed by 12 August 2007, hearing date scheduled for 11 September 2007, on the following issues: the date of the trial; the languages other than French or English that would be used in the proceedings; the timing and the manner of disclosure of the prosecution’s evidence; an e-court protocol.
2) Written submissions to be filed by 31 August 2007, hearing date scheduled for 25 September 2007, on the following issues: the role of victims in the proceedings in the period leading up to the start of the trial; procedures to be adopted for instructing expert witnesses; the approach to be adopted to witness familiarization and witness proofing.
3) Written submissions to be filed by 21 September 2007, hearing date scheduled for 17 October 2007, on the following issues: the status before the Trial Chamber of the evidence heard by the Pre-Trial Chamber; the status of the decisions of the Pre-Trial Chamber in trial proceedings.
