Human rights training in Libya

The Human Rights Institute successfully carried out its second human rights training session for the Qadhafi Development Foundation at the al-Fateh University, Tripoli, Libya, between 12-15 October 2008. The training was attended by Libyan lawyers, journalists, academics, medical professionals and human rights activists, and was provided by Mr. Nasser Amin, Executive Director of the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession, Ms. Debra Long of Bristol University and Mr Alex Wilks, IBAHRI Programme Lawyer.
The session focused on detainees’ rights, and also included a visit to a local prison. It was part of a project funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to provide human rights training for members of the Qadhafi Development Foundation on the prohibition and monitoring of torture and other ill-treatment.
The session was extremely well-received by the participants and was covered in the national media. More training sessions are planned for the future. It is hoped that the Qadhafi Development Foundation and other human rights activists will be able to use the training to help in the fight against torture and other gross human rights abuses and further training is planned for later in the year.
