Southeast Asia media law group

The IBAHRI has been working closely with a group of Southeast Asian media lawyers to improve freedom of expression in the region. The group provides a forum to promote capacity in litigating media law cases and to discuss and defend freedom of expression and includes representatives from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  We have sent trial observers to Malaysia, conducted training in Thailand and submitted an Amicus Brief on a case in Indonesia.  Country representatives have also conducted national trainings in Malaysia and Thailand.  Click on the links below for more information.

Regional trial observation training in Thailand

In July 2008, the IBAHRI held regional trial observation training in Bangkok to familiarise participants with the skills needed to conduct trial observations.  Areas such as fair trial standards, the role and conduct of trial observers and the preparation of observation reports were covered in-depth.  The IBAHRI also held discussions on international standards relating to freedom of expression with journalists from television, online and print publications.

Amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court of Indonesia regarding the Suharto v Time Magazine

The IBAHRI, in collaboration with a variert of commercial, journalistic, legal and non-governmental partners, submitted an amicus brief regarding the application for judicial review in the case of Suharto v Time Magazine (TIME) in Indonesia.

Media law and freedom of expression website

Following the success of training that took place in Thailand in June for the South East Asia Media Law Group, funding has been received to set up a website on media law and freedom of expression.  The website will act as a point of information sharing, capacity building and networking for media lawyers all over the world.  The launch for this website is planned in February and the IBAHRI hopes to collaborate with a number of organisations and individuals to obtain resources and links before that date.  If you are interested in becoming involved or would like to know more about the plans for the site, please email mediasite@int-bar.org.
