Committee Overview

The Committee is concerned with discrimination and gender equality issues which arise in the profession and under the general law. The Committee members are made up of private practitioners, academics and in-house counsel who assist in the promotion of discrimination and gender equality issues. Many of these professionals are members of leading law firms or corporations and have often had professional and practical experience of discrimination and equal opportunity issues.

A significant part of the Committee's work is concerned with discrimination and promotional issues in the profession. For example, following work of the Committee, the IBA at its 1998 conference in Vancouver adopted a formal resolution on non-discrimination in legal practice.

The Committee produces a newsletter twice each year with at least one copy coinciding with that year's conference. The newsletter chronicles developments in the discrimination field and publication is dependent upon contributions from members of the Committee and other members of the IBA.

The work of the Discrimination Law Committee underpins many areas of practice.

The Committee has been fortunate to enjoy very active support from its Officers as well as invaluable input from other Committees. It is a sign of the Committee's growing strength that increasingly we are asked to co-sponsor sessions with other IBA Committees.

The Officers are always keen to encourage others to join in the work so if you would like to contribute an article, suggest a topic for future conferences then as indicated below, please contact any of the Officers whose details are listed below. E-mail is our preferred means of communication.

Additionally, the Discrimination Law Committee works with the following Committees to form the Human Resources Section:

Employment and Industrial Relations Law
Immigration and Nationality Law
