Human Rights Law
Committee Overview
The Human Rights Law Committee is concerned with all human rights matters relevant to legal practice (and its mandate is therefore wider than that of the IBA's Human Rights Institute). It provides a forum for discussion and networking for lawyers who are working in human rights and related fields and, moreover, for all lawyers who are concerned about human rights generally.
The Committee directs its attention to both national laws and to international human rights instruments and the position of lawyers themselves and the protection of the rights of others.
It participates in international and regional conferences and is also involved with the work of the Human Rights Institute. In addition, as it is affiliated with the IBA's Standing Committee for the United Nations and Other Worldwide Organisations (UNWOC), it has a working group, the members of which contribute to an IBA presence in relevant UN meetings, as the IBA has official consultative status with the UN as an NGO.
Committee members contribute articles to a newsletter which is published regularly. The newsletter represents an important forum for communication amongst its members and contributions are always warmly invited. Articles and/or suggestions should be forwarded for consideration to the Secretary and Newsletter Editor of the Committee.
The Committee has been actively involved with the implementation of the IBA Resolution on Non-Discrimination in Legal Practice (passed at the Vancouver conference in 1998) and also with the Cohabitation Law Project, which is a worldwide survey of laws dealing with heterosexual and same-sex relationships.
Additionally, the Human Rights Law Committee works with the following Committees to form the Law and Individual Rights Section:
Family Law
Indigenous Peoples
Medicine and the Law
