Insurance
Insurance is present in every facet of commercial, industrial and private life. Lawyers practising in many different fields encounter insurance and its problems and can greatly benefit from the knowledge which membership of this Committee provides. The Committee aims to provide its members, and the Division as a whole, with information about developments in insurance and reinsurance law and markets throughout the world as well as with specialist knowledge to assist in the efficient solution of practical insurance problems. New insurance products are also brought to the attention of members. Additionally, the Insurance Committee works with the following Committees to form the Financial Services Section: Banking Law For further information on any forthcoming or past IBA event, go to the conference homepage or contact the marketing department. After the 2007 IBA Annual Conference in Singapore, we requested submissions from our committee members for this project, regarding the impact of local law on claims made policies, and in particular the issues of the late notification of claims and circumstances and time bars.
We received 31 contributions from different jurisdictions, which have been combined into one document and can be downloaded here. We will also be distributing hard copies at the IBA Annual Conference in Buenos Aires. These papers are a superb demonstration of the diversity of insurance law around the world. It is very interesting to read them and discover how various countries approach the same legal issue in different ways. One of the good things about diversity is that it supports innovation in insurance and keeps insurance lawyers very busy! We give a very special thanks to all the contributors for their valuable papers. We know that it is always difficult to find the time to work on projects of this type.
