Technology Law
Committee Overview
The Technology Committee of the International Bar Association brings together lawyers practising aspects of the law particularly relevant to modern technologies. They have in common that they deal with developing bodies of law coming to grips with the new questions posed by new technologies. The mandate of the Technology Committee is broad and includes virtually any kind of technology. At present, we have seven subcommittees with the following areas of focus:
The Emerging Technologies Subcommittee focuses on emerging technologies which include areas ranging from Life Sciences through to Nano Technology.
The focus of the Outsourcing and Shared Services Subcommittee is on outsourcing service and supply agreements in all their aspects.
The Internet Business Subcommittee focusses broadly on e-commerce and other internet issues.
The User Generated Content Subcommittee focusses on the user generated content issues that are challenging the internet and entertainment industries.
The Intrusive Technologies Subcommittee focusses on technologies that may threaten the privacy and security of individuals, ranging from satellite surveillance to smart cards.
Additionally, the Technology Law Committee works with the following Committees to form the

Emerging Technologies
This decade has seen the emergence of industry transforming technologies in the life science, advanced materials, internet and energy sectors. Biogenetics, nanotechnology, clean energy and web 3.0 all represent quantum leaps in their respective fields. These technologies have challenged their applicable conceptual, regulatory and transactional legal frameworks. The Emerging Technology Subcommittee explores the technological and business aspects of tomorrow's most important new technologies and grapples with their legal implications even while proferring practical practitioner tools to manage practices in these exciting new fields.

Outsourcing and Shared Services

The Internet Business Subcommittee addresses technical and legal aspects of doing business online, including the display, storage and transmission of content. Aspects of this include internet safety (consumer protection, online security, and child safety), privacy, data retention, digital rights management, and counterfeiting and piracy issues relating to internet businesses.

User Generated Content
The Subcommittee deals with content-related issues on the internet, hereunder what content is permitted and how such content should be regulated and/or monitored. Relevant topics are
freedom of speech issues versus limitations thereon in respect of illegal content as defined by international conventions and/or local law; control and monitoring issues relevant for service providers in respect of content generated by their users.

The Intrusive Technologies Subcommittee looks at developments in the law, practice and technology associated with the use and monitoring of personal, business and other activities. An example is the surveillance of locations from orbiting satellites, another is the use of Smartcards to enable travel on public transport systems and a third is the use of Remote Frequency Identification Devices ( RFIDs) on clothes labels in department stores. The policy issues raised by the use of such technologies embraces privacy and human rights concerns. The sub committee is working with the Outer Space Committee and the Human Rights Institute to promote the establishment of a new international convention on the use of data obtained from satellite surveillance.

The Disputes and Rights Subcommittee is concerned with the underlying law and procedures relating to disputes involving intellectual property rights (patents,designs,copyright,data rights,confidential information and branding rights ),information technology and communications whether by litigation or increasingly by arbitration and other means of dispute resolution.
