Section Update/ News Alert!

Australian hotel consumers now have redress if they do not receive what they expect.  A resort advertising a “luxury room” cannot claim mere ‘puff’ or advertising slang and may be liable for damages flowing from misrepresentation.  Read the full 2008 judgment in Stephenson v Flight Centre Flight Centre Ltd. and Club Mediterranee (Australasia) Pty Ltd click here

On 24 March 2008, the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS), concluded its hearing of the appeal of Floyd Landis, the American cyclist who was banned from cycling by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) last year.  He was stripped of his Tour de France title following a positive doping result.  The CAS decision is expected in June 2008.  Read the Reuters report>>

Section Overview

The Leisure Industries Section comprises more than 250 international lawyers practicing in the fields of travel, tourism, hospitality, sports and gaming law. Initially, the Section started as the Travel Law Section and addressed the needs of travel law practitioners serving the travel industry.  It grew to merge with the Tourism and Sports and Gaming sections expanding in its scope to provide a specialist network of professionals in the leisure industries.

The Section recognises that lawyers who work in the leisure industries often practice in one of the more traditional legal fields (aviation, property, finance, maritime, intellectual property, employment, litigation, conflict of laws, consumer law, insurance and trade law).  The Section provides a focused forum on issues which emerge due to the greater amount of leisure time available and the increased internationalisation of sports and gaming.

International Travel and Leisure Organisations Database
Over past years, the Section has compiled a database of international travel and leisure organizations.  This database includes associations, societies, councils and specialist events across the world, all in the travel and leisure industries.
