Overview
In the last decade, lawyers in industry, government agencies, private practice or otherwise associated with energy have built up an expertise in UK energy law and practice which did not formerly exist in the UK. In the course of numerous negotiations these lawyers have formed both a professional and a social bond and the need has been identified for regular meetings at which professional information and expertise can be exchanged and social contacts can be developed.
The United Kingdom Oil Lawyers' Group (UKOLG) was established under the auspices of the International Bar Association's Section on Energy and Natural Resources Law (SERL) in 1985. In 1994 the Group changed its name to the United Kingdom Energy Lawyers' Group (UKELG) to reflect broader areas of interest, including the electricity and coal industries. UKELG is a subcommittee of the IBA Oil & Gas Committee.
The Group meets 2 - 3 times per year, in the early evening, when visiting speakers lead discussion on matters of mutual and topical interest. The Group also holds an annual drinks party in the summer and a quiz night as well as other occasional social functions.
