In the highly competitive and demanding environment where ever increasing pressures are being felt in the practice of law, every lawyer - whether a partner or not, whether performing a specific management responsibility or not - must be prepared to meet these challenges.  The Law Firm Management Committee provides lawyers with the practical tools that they need in order to enhance their practice, their business development skills and their management capabilities.

The Committee provides a forum for informative, practical and relevant programmes, seminars, discussion forums and articles on all aspects of practice and law firm management for firms of all sizes.

By joining the Committee, you will also:

  • Have an outstanding opportunity for those with an interest in practice development and lawyer and law firm management to meet colleagues and industry experts from around the world - thereby benefiting from the exchange of experiences and knowledge
  • Receive in hard copy the Committee’s Newsletter, which is a serious management ‘journal’ containing substantive articles on a wide range of contemporary issues dealing with practice development and lawyer and law firm management, and covering topics such as strategic planning; mergers; associations and networks; partner performance, reviews and remuneration; leadership; governance arrangements; organisational structures; profit enhancement and financial performance; people attraction, retention, management and development; marketing and business development, etc.

We would be delighted to have you join our Committee where we are confident you will find its work to be of interest and benefit.

Constituent Projects

Some of our on-going projects include:

  • organising roadshows to bring law firm management expertise to lawyers in less-privileged jurisdictions
  • developing stronger ties with other professional organisations including making our most sought-after speakers available for seminars organised by them
  • forging closer alliances within the IBA to promote joint seminars, benefit from the tremendous wealth of expertise and experience that exists elsewhere in the organisation and encourage networking

Law Firm Governance Initiative - Best Practices Guidelines

On October 18, 2007, the Law Firm Management Committee and IBA Group Members finalized “Best Practice Guidelines” for law firm governance.  These guidelines identify certain general principles and standards that may help law firms manage their practices in a way that will provide an optimal environment (i) for lawyers in which to work and develop their skills and (ii) for law firms to stand up to the challenges they face, some of which include the increasing power of governments, the increasing complexity and intrusiveness of regulation, the weakness of the processes of justice, corruption, social change and evolving societal expectations.  The “Best Practice Guidelines” include recommendations for law firms vis-à-vis their employees, clients and the community at large.  Click here to view the entire text of the guidelines.
