Friday 22 September 2017

On 22 September 2017, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI), the Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) and the Law Society of South Africa delivered an oral statement to the 36th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council as part of the Universal Periodic Review of South Africa.

In the statement, the IBAHRI, SALC and the Law Society of South Africa stated that the African National Congress' (ANC) proposal for an African criminal court as well as South Africa's involvement in the demise of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) tribunal run counter to guaranteeing equal access to justice and a fair trial for all. Further, the statement makes recommendations to counter xenophobic tensions in the country.
