What makes for a healthy democracy?

The rise in populism and protectionism globally, including in Europe, are undermining democracy and the rule of law.

In the European Union, challenges to the independence of the judiciary and freedom of speech threaten the core EU values in Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union including democracy and the rule of law.

2019 is an important year for the EU with the departure of the United Kingdom, European Parliament elections and appointment of new European Commissioners. This high level event will bring together the most senior representatives from EU institutions and civil society to address the key elements of a healthy democracy and why it is important for citizens.

A series of short videos on the rule of law and its importance for citizens and for a democratic society will be shown
