IBA’s first live webcast and interactive Q&A session

1430 GMT on Monday 15 February will see the IBA’s first live webcast interview with Stuart Popham, Senior Partner of Clifford Chance worldwide, followed by an interactive questions and answers session. He will discuss subjects including strategies for successfully managing law firms through the global financial crisis. The interview will be conducted by award-winning former CNN journalist and financial expert Todd Benjamin.

IBA members to contribute to World Bank ‘Doing Business’ Report 2011 – register your interest now!

The World Bank has asked the IBA to be a global partner in their Doing Business project. Doing Business researches business laws and regulations in over 180 countries. The project identifies which business regulations are most favourable to economic growth. The data and analysis is used to help the World Bank advise policy-makers in developing countries. All members are encouraged to participate in this prestigious pro bono initiative; please follow the link below for details.

Reflections on the IBA ICC 2010 Review Conference: legacy, impact and sustainability of the Rome Statute System

IBA ICC 2010 Review ConferenceOn 19 January the IBA ICC Monitoring and Outreach Programme organised a roundtable discussion on ‘Reflections on the 2010 Review Conference: legacy, impact, and sustainability of the Rome Statute System’. The event took place at the prestigious premises of the Peace Palace in The Hague and featured four prominent experts on issues related to international justice: Judge Philippe Kirsch, Ambassador Jorge Lomonaco, Ambassador Stephen Rapp and Professor William Schabas. The roundtable was moderated by Arvinder Sambei.


Continuing support for the Afghan Independent Bar Association

Afghan BarThe IBAHRI’s new legal specialist for Afghanistan began work in Kabul in January 2010, thanks to funding from the Swedish foreign ministry. After assisting in the establishment of the first independent Afghan Bar Association (AIBA) amid political turmoil and persistent violence in Afghanistan in 2008, the IBAHRI continues to support the young bar.


Sri Lanka: IBAHRI marks the anniversary of prominent journalist’s assassination

On the first anniversary of the assassination of prominent Sri Lankan journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge, the IBA Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) reiterated its call to the Sri Lankan government to conduct a prompt and effective investigation into his case, together with that of the murders of other journalists over the past three years.


Report on anti-dumping investigations against China in Latin America

In response to the debate regarding the increase in trade protectionism as a result of the use of anti-dumping measures, the IBA Divisions Project Team, with the support of the IBA Trade and Customs Law Committee and the IBA Latin American Regional Forum, have released a report on the background and trends of the growing number of anti-dumping disputes against China in the region.

Communications Law Committee’s 8th Annual Young Lawyers’ Writing Competition and In-house Counsel Outstanding Achievement Award

Writing imageThis year, the IBA Communications Law Committee on the occasion of the 21st Annual Communications and Competition Law Conference in Barcelona, 17-18 May, is running its 8th Annual Young Lawyers’ Writing Competition and annual In-house Counsel Outstanding Achievement Award.

The In-house Counsel Outstanding Achievement Award will be presented to an in-house counsel from a telecommunications carrier or service provider anywhere in the world that has shown excellence in their work and achievements over the last 12 months.

The Young Lawyers’ Writing Competition is open to lawyers up to and including the age of 35 on the deadline date for submitting applications (Thursday 1 April 2010). Applicants are asked to submit a short paper on one of the following topics:

• Exclusivity arrangements and market entrance in communications markets; or
• Current Mobile and Spectrum issues.

Scholarships to attend the 4th World Women Lawyers Conference, 15-16 April, London

The IBA Women Lawyers’ Interest Group is delighted to announce that scholarships will again be awarded to lawyers who wish to participate in the 4th World Women Lawyers Conference 15-16 April in London, but who are unable to do so owing to financial constraints.

This conference will be dealing with issues that address the boosting of marketing tools for women lawyers, as well as featuring a comprehensive range of topics both geographically and in terms of coverage of the legal practice spectrum. The conference will showcase women in high level positions as panellists and will give participants two full days to interact and network.

IBA Young Lawyers' Committee Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award 2010

The IBA Young Lawyers’ Committee is pleased to announce the opening of nominations for the 2010 IBA Young Lawyers' Committee Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award in recognition of William Reece Smith Jr. This award will be presented to a young lawyer who has not only shown excellence in their work and achievements in their career to date but has also shown a commitment to professional/ethical standards.

This year’s winner will be honoured at the IBA Annual Conference in Vancouver, 3-8 October 2010.
