Rethinking leadership approaches in light of Covid-19 – individuals matter!

Rethinking leadership approaches in light of Covid-19 – individuals matter!

A webinar presented by the IBA Law Firm Management Committee supported by the IBA Legal Policy and Research Unit

30 SEP 2020 1500 – 1600 BST

Covid-19 has forced full-time, home-based working and physical isolation from the outside world. Firms need to change and improve how they manage staff in a post-Covid-19 world. This webinar will be useful to share approaches adopted by law firm leaders around the world.

Law firm leaders need to better understand the individual stresses and needs of all members of their firms during these challenging times. Working from home, in virtual teams, creates challenges that have never really been experienced before.

Our panel will explore not only the challenges that individuals face, but also the actions that management can take to provide better leadership in light of these issues. The issues include:

  • isolation;
  • loneliness;
  • lack of pastoral care;
  • lack of supervision;
  • difficulties faced by those whose living arrangements are not ideal for home working; and
  • structural issues around being unable to differentiate between home and work life, both in terms of stress but also domestic tension.

All firms recognise the need for flexible approaches to accommodate individuals, but they also need to consider how they change (and improve) their pre-Covid-19 approach in a post-pandemic world. This includes:

  • planning for supervision;
  • reconsidering the billable hour culture;
  • virtual mentoring and performance reviews;
  • flexible career development;
  • diversity and inclusion; and
  • reward and motivation.
