IBA, OECD and UNODC Anti-Corruption Workshops Roundup: Turkey Italy and Moscow  IBA, OECD and UNODC Anti-Corruption Workshops Roundup: Turkey Italy and Moscow

The International Bar Association (IBA) in collaboration with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) hosted three anti-corruption workshops in Europe. The workshops were held in Istanbul, Turkey (28 March); Rome, Italy (29 March) and Moscow, Russia (17 April) and were some of our best received workshops to date.

The findings of a major global survey of private legal practitioners, released today at the 2010 International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference in Vancouver, Canada, show widespread concern amongst lawyers about corruption in the legal profession and a lack of awareness of key international anti-corruption instruments, such as the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention.

Corruption is a major obstacle to achieving sustainable development and the private sector has a significant role to play in the fight against corruption.

The International Bar Association (IBA), Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) will host anti-corruption workshops in Cape Town, South Africa, and Windhoek, Namibia, on 29 October and 30 October respectively. The workshops are part of the global organisations’ joint Anti-Corruption Strategy for the Legal Profession (Strategy) – a project focusing on the role lawyers play in international corruption.

The IBA and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), together with the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime, hosted anti-corruption workshops on South Africa and Namibia at the end of October 2012. Designed especially for lawyers, the workshops focused on the role lawyers play in international corruption and how international instruments and legislation applies to legal practice.

On 6 December 2012, Panama City will, for the first time, host an anti-corruption workshop for legal professionals. The workshop will be the 20th in a series that has been held in major cities across the globe. Developed by the International Bar Association (IBA), Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the workshop is part of the global organisations’ joint Anti-Corruption Strategy for the Legal Profession (Strategy).

The third IBA webcast of 2015 featured José Ugaz, Chair of Transparency International (TI), and was broadcast live on 10 June. Ugaz is one of the world’s leading anti-corruption lawyers, During his time as Ad Hoc Attorney General of Peru, Ugaz prosecuted hundreds of government officials. He led the corruption case against the former President of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence.

News Release: Friday 27 May 2016. The International Bar Association (IBA), in partnership with the Basel Institute on Governance, today published the results of a global survey that shows bribery and undue political influence are the two most frequently reported forms of corruption observed in judicial systems.

The survey is part of the IBA Judicial Integrity Initiative (JII), a project launched by IBA President David W Rivkin in January 2015 aimed at combating judicial corruption.

Report of the IBA Task Force on Extraterritorial Jurisdiction Report of the IBA Task Force on Extraterritorial Jurisdiction

The Task Force on Extraterritorial Jurisdiction was formed to focus on two important questions:
'When should a state be able to regulate persons or conduct occurring outside its territory?' 'How should overlaps or conflicts of jurisdiction between two or more states be resolved?'
The report responds to these questions by laying out the principles governing extraterritoriality. The report focuses in particular on competition law, tort law, criminal law, securities law, insolvency law, and corruption.
