A webinar presented by the IBA North American Regional office, the IBA Anti-Corruption Committee and the IBA Legal Policy & Research Unit

The Summit for Democracy, an initiative led by US President Joe Biden – and joined by over 100 countries – will be held virtually from 9-10 December 2021. The US State Department invited the IBA to be among a group of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) it is consulting in connection with all three Summit pillars: (1) human rights, (2) corruption; and (3) authoritarianism. Several CSO participants, including the IBA, have received the State Department’s endorsement to conduct one of a handful of ‘unofficial’ side events connected to the Summit. Finally, and stepping back for a moment, there is broad agreement that, worldwide, we are in the midst of a 15-year democratic and rule of law recession. This Summit is convening the world’s most robust democracies and vibrant CSOs in an effort to reverse this 15-year slide.
