A webinar presented by the IBA Professional Ethics Committee
What belonged to history in Europe until just a few months ago has now taken place: an invasion and an armed conflict are ongoing in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have been forced to flee from their own country, while Russia is isolated from the international community. Many ethical issues have arisen, many in connection with those relating to human rights and the rule of law.
There are a number of topics that are relevant to the legal profession, as ethical behaviour is our defining characteristic as a profession, and the current circumstances can create a threat to or give rise to: the ability to demonstrate appropriate conduct; the ethics of accepting certain types of instructions; the need for a lawyer to be an impartial and professional adviser; personal circumstances that place pressure on ethical behaviour; the moral responsibilities of lawyers; risks to lawyers who may speak out; threats to the rule of law which we all uphold and defend, and more. Our panel of speakers will discuss these issues, which are of great relevance to any legal practitioner.
