SUMMARY:Resilience under pressure: thriving or surviving in the legal pro
 fession?
DESCRIPTION:Resilience refers to one’s abilities to survive adversities a
nd thrive in life. The evidence indicates a higher rate of depression\,
anxiety\, substance abuse and heart disease among lawyers than among the
population as a whole. The attrition rate in law firms is high. Gender
balance at the higher levels of the profession is not easily achieved. R
esilience is recognised as a vital coping skill for not just surviving\,
but also thriving in the legal workplace with all its demands and chall
enges.\n\nIn this session\, we will explore how resilience might be deve
loped and encouraged in individuals\, in law firms and in the way educat
ional and training programmes are structured and delivered. Given all th
e challenges around adapting to NewLaw\, technology\, new client demands
 \, commoditisation and work/life balance\, how can we make sure that\, t
hrough training and education\, both the experienced lawyer and new lawy
er become more resilient and able to thrive in a dramatically changing p
rofession? Can resilience be taught or is the answer ‘simply’ changing t
 he culture and better management?
