SUMMARY:Agricultural supply chains in Southeast Asia: legal consideration
s from ‘farm to the fork’
DESCRIPTION:The agriculture and food industry is one of the most importan
t economic sectors in Southeast Asia\, accounting for up to 48 per cent
of the gross domestic product. Market liberalisation\, market-driven pol
icy\, energy and food price fluctuations\, modernisation of retail and t
he increasing demand for fresh\, high-quality food are critical consider
ations for all market participants. The legal dimension and commercial i
mplications of food standards\, domestic regulations and good practices\
, as well as import restrictions are some of the main challenges affecti
ng the trade flow of food and agricultural goods. Companies in the regio
n must cope with legal issues arising throughout the supply chain – from
producers through distributors to retail outlets – which have become in
creasingly complex. Our panels of experts from international institution
 s\, in-house counsel from agri-food businesses\, private practitioners a
nd academic legal circles will share their knowledge and discuss with th
e audience the key issues relevant to all parties involved in bringing f
ood products from Asia to tables around the world. These include:\n\n• t
he opportunities and challenges presented by regional and bilateral trad
e agreements on supply chains that snake through multiple Asia Pacific j
urisdictions\;\n• the practical and legal aspects of food standards and
traceability in transnational supply agreements\;\n• potential litigatio
n risks and import restrictions in the United States and elsewhere arisi
ng from the use of forced labour and other human rights abuses\, and wha
t companies can do to protect themselves from that liability\;\n• strate
gies to protect companies from the consequences of handling non-complian
t\, fraudulent\, tainted or unsafe food products\; and\n• protecting com
panies and clients from risks associated with transport\, logistics and
 shipping delays.
