SUMMARY:Merger trends in the communications sector
DESCRIPTION:The telecoms sector has been characterised by increasing cons
olidation in recent years and it’s important to anticipate the future tr
ends. Consolidation is also presenting increasing\nchallenges for compet
ition and regulatory authorities. In pure mobile\, most recently\, the o
utright prohibition of Three UK/O2 in\nthe UK and the abandonment of Tel
iaSonera/Telenor in Denmark was followed by the clearance of Hutchison/V
implecom in Italy\, subject to remedies. At the same time\, recent deals
such as BASE/ Liberty in Belgium and Jazztel/Orange in Spain involving
fixed/\nmobile integration have presented different substantive and\, fo
r the moment\, less concerning issues. In this session we will\ndiscuss
the current and future consolidation trends in the telecoms\nindustry. W
e shall then consider the antitrust and regulatory issues\nraised by suc
h mergers and acquisitions. In particular\, we will\nexamine:\n• The cur
rent state of consolidation in telecoms – where are we\nnow and where ar
e we going?\n• How cable and broadband consolidation affects telecoms\nm
ergers\n• The emerging framework for assessing conglomerate telecoms\nme
rgers\n• How to steer a four to three mobile merger through to\nclearanc
 es: a ‘live’ experience
