SUMMARY:Changing business models of media in the digital world and its im
 plications for democracy
DESCRIPTION:Well-functioning media has always been one of the cornerstone
s of modern democracy. In the digital age of social media and fake news\
, the importance of independent\, trustworthy and well-resourced media i
s ever higher. However\, media has been faced with a financial crisis fo
rcing a rethink of its business model. Commercial media has been traditi
onally been financed through advertisement revenue and subscriptions. Ov
er the last ten years\, this business model has been slowly collapsing\,
advertisement and subscription revenue dropping year over year. Digital
platforms are taking ever-larger share of the attention and thus of the
advertisement market\, leaving less breathing space for media with edit
orial content. Media companies have been forced to cut down their operat
ions significantly\, and many have been shut down entirely.\n\nDue to it
s significant role in society\, media has been subject to a variety of r
egulatory obligations and liabilities. In the meantime\, social media pl
atforms and new digital media services have been able to expand their fo
otprint without much regulatory burden. On the contrary\, liability exem
ptions set out in many countries have made it easy for social media plat
forms to thrive. At the same time the sharing of media content is an ess
ential element of the service for many social media platforms.\n\nWhat a
re the implications of this development for media and democracy? What wi
ll be the future business models for media in the digital world? Is priv
ate media becoming a non-profit operation run by foundations or wealthy
individuals? What will be the role of public broadcasters in this develo
pment? Is the regulatory balance between traditional media\, social medi
a platforms and other new digital platforms fair? What regulatory /intel
lectual property / other legal challenges do media face in developing ne
w sustainable business models?\n\nIn this session we invite media / soci
al media lawyers and executives\, regulators and other decision-makers t
 o discuss these issues.
