SUMMARY:All the way back: the movement of Asian art in regulation and pra
 ctice
DESCRIPTION:Over hundreds of years\, Asian antiques and art works travell
ed all over the world to end up in museums\, private collections and gal
leries often in the Western world. For many years\, there has been a str
ong interest in Asian art and culture in the West by scholars and collec
tors. Sculptures\, paintings and porcelain – but also often burial and a
rcheological founds from excavations and parts of temples and houses of
faith – found their way into well-known collections and trade.\n\nThis m
ay have happened in a correct way at the time\, but there are growing co
ncerns. Provenance legal issues and questions about collecting and trans
actions in colonial times have been raised\, there is a growing interest
in the return of lost national heritage. Authentication may be difficul
t with a lack of provenance. Collectors\, dealers and museums require an
d investigate provenance not only for new purchases but now also for ite
ms that have been sitting in their collections for many years without mu
ch questioning. Illegal excavations and export have taken place over the
years and still continue. The UNESCO treaty draws lines in the 1970s bu
t that may not be the final answer. And then there are also many fakes a
nd frauds.\n\nOur panel of lawyers and experts from across the globe and
a range of backgrounds investigate and discuss these issues in what pro
mises to be a lively and highly interesting session.
