DESCRIPTION:The session addresses specific actions that all components of
  the legal profession can take towards the attainment of United Nations 
 Sustainable Development Goal 1: the eradication of poverty.\n\nThe sessi
 on shows how certain employment practices affect society\, often influen
 cing the extent of poverty in the region where they operate. The session
  specifically addresses how lawyers can support and promote employment p
 ractices that mitigate or eliminate poverty. Furthermore\, the session a
 sserts that change-orientated employment policies and practices are ethi
 cal imperatives for lawyers and the legal profession. Presenters and dis
 cussants will offer specific examples of how lawyers can advise clients 
 to protect\, respect and avoid human rights transgressions. The session 
 demonstrates that lawyers can do well and do good.\n\nEach topic provide
 s the basis for a chapter in the Committee’s new book on the practical w
 ays the legal profession can mitigate poverty and build capability.\n\nT
 opics under consideration include:\n\n• wages and benefits\;\n• poor wor
 kers and decent treatment\;\n• decent work\;\n• liabilities\; and\n• wor
 king with diverse groups\, including minorities\, to achieve fairness an
 d equity.
