SUMMARY:SPPI Showcase: the economics of justice – using cost benefit anal
 ysis to demonstrate the economic returns of legal aid programmes
DESCRIPTION:This Showcase will launch a report by the IBA’s Access to Jus
 tice and Legal Aid Committee and the World Bank\, which examines the net
  economic benefits of legal aid programmes in countries around the world
 .\n\nEconomists\, lawyers and statisticians have analysed more than 80 c
 ost–benefit analyses from a wide range of jurisdictions\, including larg
 e and small common and civil law jurisdictions\, from all continents. Th
 e report reveals that legal aid is not only a fundamental principle of a
  fair society but can also be smart economics\, including by saving gove
 rnment expenditure in other areas and bringing a range of benefits to th
 e economy. Most usefully\, the report provides practical guidance for po
 licymakers and policy influencers – from civil society organisations (CS
 Os)\, bar associations\, legal aid administrators and government officia
 ls – on how to conduct your own cost–benefit analysis of legal aid progr
 ammes in your jurisdiction.\n\nThe project is already attracting widespr
 ead interest among international and national bodies. High-profile speak
 ers from IBA bodies\, the World Bank and other institutions will present
  the report and discuss its implications.
