SUMMARY:Smart or dishonest? Using the work of others as your own in legal
  study and legal practice
DESCRIPTION:This session will examine attitudes to plagiarism amongst stu
dents and junior lawyers\, and the challenges it represents to the profe
ssion. Many students now see "copy and paste" as a legitimate means of p
reparing assessments\, and this can bleed into their approach to practis
e as lawyers. While such an approach may be efficient\, if done excessiv
ely and without proper attribution\, it represents an academic offence o
f plagiarism. In a practice context\, it represents unethical practice a
nd potentially significant breach of copyright. It also demonstrates a l
ack of the ability to articulate ideas and themes in the lawyer’s own wo
rds\, basic communications skills needed at all professional levels. How
should law firms and universities deal with this worrying new mindset a
nd potentially unethical practice - do we need to be more accepting of s
uch new approaches and\, if not\, how can we effectively control this ra
 pidly escalating problem?
