SUMMARY:Public and indigenous consultation processes and consent in large
infrastructure and critical minerals projects - current trends
DESCRIPTION:Across jurisdictions\, there’s an observable trend towards ac
celerated environmental approvals for large infrastructure projects\, at
times recategorised as strategic projects of national security priority
\, such as with critical minerals projects. What will this entail for th
e standard public consultation processes and general stakeholder engagem
ent? Many jurisdictions have ample experience with such public consultat
ion processes\, whether in the context of mining or nuclear projects\, f
or example. What are the lessons learned? This session will critically e
valuate the latest trends across jurisdictions with environmental permit
ting procedures\, its implications from a social licence to operate pers
pective\, good governance and best practices and ultimately from a susta
inable development point of view\, which requires balancing business\, s
 ocial and environmental concerns.\n
