Artificial intelligence: the next level

Following the publication of the IBA’s The Future is Now report on AI, the BIC has continued to focus on ethics and the impact of AI on core values of the profession. The BIC Working Group on AI has developed an extended survey of guidance for lawyers around the world and has focused on synthesising the common denominators of ethics issues. For bars that have not yet addressed such issues, and for those in more advanced stages of engagement on the issue, the programme will highlight best practices and address how bars can develop road maps for development in this area.

Diversity & inclusion and Artificial Intelligence

The session will cover both the risks of AI in perpetuating bias and the opportunities for AI to support diversity and inclusion initiatives globally. Risks include algorithmic bias, discrimination, lack of transparency in AI models, unequal access to technology, data privacy concerns, and the risk of homogeneous teams overlooking diversity in AI ethics frameworks. In addition, automation raises questions about job displacement and the fair distribution of economic benefits. Conversely, AI offers opportunities for bias detection and mitigation, improved accessibility through tools such as real-time translation and speech-to-text, and personalised learning experiences that can support students from diverse backgrounds. Fostering diversity within AI development teams can produce more inclusive systems.

Artificial intelligence and professional ethics: the results of the BIC AI Working Group

Since its involvement with the BIC AI project in 2024 and the issuance of the IBA report, the BIC’s working group has been updating and expanding its findings and research. The Working Group report will be issued in 2026, with anticipated recommendations for further commentary to the IBA’s Principles of Conduct for the Profession, as well as guidance for bar associations in issuing their own statements or considering changes to their own ethics rules.
