Matthew Goldstein

Biography

A partner in the Corporate Department, Matthew is a member of the Private Funds Group. Matthew focuses his practice on the formation and operation of a wide variety of private investment funds, including private equity funds, credit funds, hybrid funds, infrastructure funds and real estate funds. He also has significant experience in the formation of secondaries platforms and continuation vehicles, and he regularly represents private funds in connection with co-investments and direct investments in private equity, infrastructure, real estate and other transactions. Matthew advises leading global investment firms in their investment management M&A and other strategic transactions, including acquisitions and strategic partnership arrangements. Matthew has substantial experience in establishing customized private investment funds with respect to a range of U.S. and non-U.S. investors and advises on management company “upper tier” arrangements. Matthew advised Apollo Global Management in the $24.7 billion final closing of its latest flagship fund, Apollo Investment Fund IX, the world’s largest private equity fund at the time, and has been a trusted advisor to Apollo and its managed funds and accounts for over a decade. Matthew’s representative private funds clients have also included: Canyon Partners, Centerbridge Partners, Clearlake Capital Group, Crestview Partners, Gamut Capital, KKR, Searchlight Capital Partners and TowerBrook, among others. Matthew has been recognized by a number of industry awards and publications. Most recently, the Financial Times recognized him in its 2021 Innovative Lawyers Report for “Innovation in Sustainability and ESG” for his notable experience in ESG-focused funds and products. Law360 deemed Matthew a 2021 “Rising Star” for fund formation, distinguishing him among a handful of peers as an attorney under 40 whose legal accomplishments transcend their age. Chambers USA recognizes him as an “Up and Coming” lawyer for private equity fund formation, with clients noting that he is “bright, sharp, incredibly diligent and thorough,” and he is also recognized as a “Recommended Lawyer” in private equity funds by The Legal 500. Matthew regularly speaks at industry events, including panels and conferences hosted by the International Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association, among others.
