Description
Africa’s countries and communities are going through serious upheavals caused by the mix of internal armed or civil conflicts; and the impact that pressures of climate change on the countries’ water resources have had on the living conditions and environmental conditions of many. The impacts are widespread and diverse, ranging from the nomadic movements in search of water in West Africa, to the water crisis that has engulfed Cape Town over the past year. Added to this are the huge problems of water and sanitation issues that have made Africa a major beneficiary of United Nations WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene). This panel examines water issues in Africa and possible strategies to ensure adequacy for all persons, and to promote equitable water use, and thereby promote peace.
