The IBA Young Lawyers’ Committee’s Training Series: Session four, ‘Building your personal brand and international professional network through the IBA’

The webinar focused on how the young lawyers use the IBA to help their career and build their international network. Peter Bartlett, Chair of IBA Legal Division, gave a general picture of the IBA including its members, its committees and divisions and also various IBA events. He encouraged the young lawyers to participate in the IBA activities more. In particular, he mentioned the visit of IBA Chairman and senior management to China in 2019 and the high expectation on Chinese young lawyers to be more involved in IBA events.

Joe Bell, IBA Operation Director, introduced the requirements on IBA members and young lawyers as members, individual and group members. He also focused on the activities of the IBA committees giving a vivid picture how young lawyers can benefit from them. Itzik Amiel, a senior Israeli lawyer and leading brand expert, gave advice on how to use the IBA to brand oneself by a number of examples. He stressed the importance of the personal brand even for young lawyers. Sun Hee Kim, a Korean lawyer active in the IBA for several years, advised the young lawyers in the webinar that the IBA is a very good platform to make friends and build their network by taking part in not only professional events, but also a variety of leisure activities during the annual conference. As concluded by David Liu, the moderator of the webinar, the IBA has proven to be a very useful international platform for young lawyers in different jurisdictions to grow and is waiting for more young lawyers to join and lead the way in the global legal profession.

In the survey that followed the webinar, over 70 per cent of the participating young lawyers rated the webinar ‘excellent’, over 90 per cent engaged in the webinar from beginning to end. All of the panellists were ranked ‘excellent’ by over 60 per cent of participants. Over 86 per cent expressed that they would like to attend another similar webinar.
