But what are the ethical landmines? Are non-legal advisors bound to ethical rules in the exercise of their professions? And when is it acceptable to use legal services outside law firms?

Tracey is a lawyer and the director of Oakalls Consultancy Limited. She is a regulatory, compliance and ethics specialist providing a variety of advisory services to members of the solicitor’s profession.
She is a regular speaker and trainer on these topics and has delivered presentations both within the UK and internationally.
She is the Co-Chair of the International Bar Association’s Professional Ethics Committee and is on the editorial board of the Law Society’s Legal Compliance Bulletin.

Anne O’Donoghue
Anne O’Donoghue is an accredited immigration law specialist and registered migration agent, with over 27 years of experience. She is the director and principal lawyer of Immigration Solutions Lawyers (ISL). Anne is acknowledged as one of Australia’s leading immigration law specialists. Anne has a special interest in modern slavery/human rights and professional ethics.
Anne was admitted to practise in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1981, the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1987 and the High Court of Australia in 1982. In 1998, Anne received her specialist accreditation as an immigration lawyer from the NSW Law Society. Anne has been a member of the specialist accreditation advisory committee of the NSW Law Society since 2015.
Anne has also served as treasurer of the international law section of the Law Council of Australia (LCA) (2012–2016). In December 2012, Anne was appointed as a member of the LCA’s ILS executive. Anne is presently appointed as a co-chair of the ILS, human rights committee of the LCA. Anne has also been appointed as a co-chair of the LCA’s international human rights committee from December 2019. In 2020, Anne contributed to a submission for the LCA in response to the public consultation paper on the national action plan to combat modern slavery 2020–24. Anne subsequently worked on the LCA’s submission on the inquiry into human rights of women and girls in the Pacific for the ILS in her capacity as an executive member.
Carlo Pavesio
Carlo Pavesio is a co-founder and the senior partner of Pavesio e Associati.
Prior to his current role he was one of the co-founders and partners of Brosio, Casati e Associati (established on 1 July 1990) and was a partner of Allen & Overy from 1998, when the two firms merged, until 31 December 2006.
His experience is mainly focused on contentious and noncontentious matters, in corporate and contractual law advising domestic and international clients. He specializes in mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate reorganization as well as in connection with generation transfers, governance and trust.
He also has arbitration and litigation expertise. He has authored a number of articles and given several lectures on international contract law and EU law, more specifically competition law. He served as director of several listed and non-listed companies and he is currently a director of BasicNet S.p.A.
