In memoriam: Senator Joseph Lieberman

The IBA was saddened to hear of the passing of Senator Joseph ‘Joe’ Lieberman, who died on 27 March 2024 at the age of 82.

Serving as a senator for Connecticut for nearly 25 years from 1989–2013, Lieberman was the US Democratic Party nominee for Vice-President of the United States in the 2000 US presidential election, alongside Al Gore.

Following his long and distinguished political career, during which he was renowned for working across the political divide to find common ground and bipartisan solutions, Senator Lieberman had worked for ten years as senior counsel at law firm Kasowitz Benson Torres’ Government Affairs and Strategic Counsel Practice Group. There he advised individuals, firms, non-profits and trade associations at the intersection of law, business and public policy.

The Association was privileged to host Senator Lieberman as a special guest speaker at the Group Members’ Leadership Summit in 2023 in New York, where he shared insights with a receptive audience of more than 200 law firm leaders. Senator Lieberman was a strong proponent of the rule of law, describing it as ‘a great guarantor of our freedom, of order, of our prosperity, of everything’.

In a statement, his firm said: ‘We are proud that he continued to the end to be such an important voice for America’s greatest values. Joe was the wisest adviser, the most collegial colleague, and the warmest friend, and he will be greatly missed.’
