Statement by the President of the International Bar Association Almudena Arpón de Mendívil Aldama

The International Bar Association (IBA) is deeply concerned and alarmed by the recent surge in hostilities in the Middle East. As the situation rapidly deteriorates, the IBA calls on all parties to exercise utmost restraint, halt the spiralling violence and adhere to their obligations under international law.

The escalating violence poses a grave and imminent threat to stability in the region and beyond. Against the backdrop of extreme global tensions, the gravity of the situation in the Middle East cannot be overstated. These heightened conflicts have already unleashed a wave of devastation, compounding human suffering and undermining efforts towards global peace and security. The moment's urgency demands swift and decisive action to de-escalate tensions, foster dialogue, and adhere to the fundamental principles of international law.

Notes

The International Bar Association (IBA), the global voice of the legal profession, is the foremost organisation for international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. Established in 1947, shortly after the creation of the United Nations, it was born out of the conviction that an organisation made up of the world's bar associations could contribute to global stability and peace through the administration of justice.
