The guide focuses on the existing guidelines, recommendations and statutory regulations adopted on the use of AI as a professional tool throughout the world.

AI is in the focus of all economy sectors: from manufacturing to service; technology to transportation; healthcare to farming; and financial to legal service. It will be an inestimable value and indispensable in the business of the legal profession far beyond from what we are describing today as ‘Legal Tech’.

Legislation is likely to need to be changed and general rules on professional ethics and liability will be available. All of this will be the job of judges and lawyers and cannot be taken away by any software in the world.

The digitisation of the legal sector itself will provide new opportunities, as a new niche will open up for law firms that can stand by their clients on a different level away from ‘cool’ software processes.

This project is the second edition on the existing guidelines and statutory regulations on the use of AI as a professional tool. This publication of the ANLBS Committee is intended to be updated every two years, and cover the main multilateral organisational and all the listed jurisdictions.

We are thankful for the contributions from all participant firms, which made a tremendous effort to not only cover the legal aspects, but also to work together in the best interest of our legal community.

We are particularly thankful to the IBA Technology Committee, IBA North America Regional Forum and the AI & Ethics group of the Future of Legal Services Commission for their active involvement in this project and for their contributions, without which this project would not be possible.

In this context, we believe that this publication is an important tool to provide insights on public policies to ensure AI’s beneficial use as a professional tool, particularly for the legal profession in the jurisdictions considered.

We also thank the IBA for its continuing support of this initiative, and encourage the members of the IBA ANLBS Committee, IBA Technology Committee, IBA North America Regional Forum and the AI & Ethics group of the Future of Legal Services Commission to contribute in the coming editions.

If any IBA member is interested to contribute to drafting a country chapter not yet included in this publication, please do let Derya Durlu Gürzumar (deryadurlu@gmail.com) or Sönke Lund (slund@ecijalegal.com) know.
