IBA 2021 Essay Competition

There will not be an Annual Conference Scholarship taking place in 2021, however a number of IBA Sections/Committees will be offering an essay competition instead.

The sections and committee offering an essay competition include;

Essay topic: “Connecting the business and human rights and anti-corruption agendas: the role of lawyers.”

The competition winner will be awarded the following;

  • Winning essay will be published in the committee publication
  • A waived attendance to a committee event (webinar/conference) that takes place in 2021 (regrettably, we cannot guarantee that an event will take place).

Essay topic: “Interesting issues that arise in enforcing a claim of a creditor in a foreign insolvency proceeding. This can be related to a case that you have been involved with personally or are generally aware of based on a case study.”

3 winners will be chosen to have their essay published in the committee publication.

Essay topic: “BigTech companies have been subject to increasing scrutiny by regulators. While data and digital advertising are at the heart of the discussion, potential effects of reduced competition on the advertising market and the impact that has on the quality of professional journalism is another significant aspect of the debate. There are already some interventions aiming to restore the balance for protecting independent journalism and news, such as the EU Copyright Directive Article 15 and Australia's News Media Bargaining Code. Please critically discuss the effectiveness of such governmental initiatives and their potential effects on professional journalism and consumers.”

The competition winner will be awarded the following;

  • Winning essay will be published in the committee publication
  • A waived attendance to a committee event (webinar/conference) that may take place in 2021 (regrettably, we cannot guarantee that an event will take place)

Essay topic: “Trade restrictions amidst the pandemic - lessons to be learned on international trade on vaccines and other goods in times of pandemic.”

The competition winner will be awarded the following;

  • Winning essay will be published in the committee publication
  • A waived attendance to a committee event (webinar/conference) that takes place before 31 March 2022 (regrettably, we cannot guarantee that an event will take place)

Essay topic: “COVID-19 vaccine and product liability.”

The competition winner will be awarded the following;

Essay topic: “The role of the legal profession in support of sustainable development and the fight against social inequalities.”
