Christian Schmies

Christian Schmies is a financial regulatory partner in the Frankfurt office of Hengeler Mueller. Christian advises a broad range of financial market participants, including fund management companies, investment firms, depositaries and credit institutions with a particular focus on asset management and investment regulatory matters.

Francois Rayroux

Francois Rayroux is the head of the Asset Management group of Lenz & Staehelin in Switzerland and past Co-Chairman of the IBA Asset Management and Investment Funds Committee (2019-2020). He advises a number of foreign and Swiss financial institutions in all asset management, regulatory and banking matters, with a particular focus on regulatory issues in relation to financial products and services, in particular investment funds and derivatives. As regards derivatives, he is the co-author of the Swiss ISDA Opinions as well as of the Swiss opinions for the German Master Agreement.

Julio Veloso Caro

Law Degree at San Pablo-CEU University (1988). Diploma in European Studies at College of Europe in Bruges (1991) and Master of Laws (LL.M ) in Common Law Studies at Georgetown University (1992).

He started his career at Loeff Claeys Verbeke, from where he moved to Banco Santander, as Head the Legal Department for Europe and Spanish subsidiaries. Later, Julio was co-founder of SJ Berwin’s Spanish Office. In October 2005, he merged his own law firm with Rodés & Sala Law firm, becoming Partner and Head of Corporate Finance Area in that firm.

Partner of BROSETA from 2009, he heads the Private Equity and Funds área of the Firm.

He is considered as one of the leading lawyers in Spain for several prestigious Directories (Chambers & Partners, Legal 500, Best Lawyers, Who is Who, Leaders League).

Isabelle Lebbe

Isabelle Lebbe is a Partner in the Investment Management practice of Arendt & Medernach. She specialises in a wide range of investment funds with a focus on regulated funds. She advises clients on the corporate, regulatory and tax aspects of the creation, marketing and operation of investment funds and management entities. In addition to advisory activities, Isabelle launched and supervises Arendt Institute, Arendt’s learning organisation which provides open courses through training agendas, digital modules and dedicated training programmes designed to meet the specific context of clients’ organisations. Isabelle also leads the diversity and sustainability initiatives within the Arendt Group. She has been a member of the Luxembourg Bar since 1999 and chairs or sits at a number of committees and sub-committees established by the Association of the Luxembourg Fund Industry. A regular conference speaker, Isabelle also teaches at the University of Luxembourg and the University of Maastricht.

Oriane Schoonbroodt

Oriane is a former diplomat and senior policy advisor at the European Parliament and the United Nations, where she was in charge of the Human Rights Committee.

She’s also the former co-founder and director of the 8 Foundation that developed communication campaigns in favor of the 8 Millennium Development Goals - MDG’s (the former SDG’s) launched by the United Nations.

Gast Juncker

Gast Juncker has been member of the Luxembourg Bar since 1993 and partner at Elvinger Hoss Prussen since 2000. He has over 25 years of experience in the establishment of investment funds and investment companies. He advises clients in relation to regulatory matters and the structuring of their Luxembourg investment fund operations. Gast is listed as one of the leading lawyers in investment funds by IFLR and recommended for his advice in relation to Chinese investments and his work with Asian clients by Chambers and Partners. He is member of the Board of Directors and the Regulatory Board of ALFI (Association of the Luxembourg Fund Industry) and Co-chair of the legal and regulatory committee of ALFI.

Jack Nichols

Jack Nichols is a Senior Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel at the Green Climate Fund, which finances projects to reduce, and tackle the effects of, climate change. He works on legal structuring, negotiating and documenting the various forms of funding that the GCF deploys, including investments through new and existing funds, loans and grants.

Mark White

Mark is a partner at the Irish law firm of McCann FitzGerald. As Head of the firm’s Investment Management Group, Mark advises a wide variety of clients who are engaged in the promotion and management of investment funds, as well as on the establishment of AIFMs and UCITS management companies. Clients include fund managers in the domestic and international funds market, as well as large institutional seed investors. Mark specialises in private funds, with particular emphasis on hedge funds, private equity funds, infrastructure funds and real estate funds. He was involved in leading the industry group which introduced the new Irish investment limited partnership regime and is an active member of a number of other Industry groups.

Lora Froud

Lora advises clients on the structuring and operation of onshore and offshore investment funds, both regulated and unregulated, and also advises on all legal aspects of asset management. She specialises in regulated funds.

Her clients include operators, asset managers, depositaries and custodians of investment funds. Johannes Dietenberger

Johannes is a Senior Counsel at Deutsche Bank AG. He advises the Corporate Bank and the Investment Bank sales, trading and clearing business in banking, capital markets and regulatory law matters with a particular focus on derivatives. Johannes is a member of different working groups of the Association of German Banks (BdB).

Jeremy Lam

Jeremy is head of the financial services practice. He has over 20 years' experience in the establishment of private funds as well as the authorisation of retail funds for sale to the public in Hong Kong.

Jeremy also advises across a wide spectrum of regulatory matters relevant to the asset management industry including establishment and licensing with the SFC, regulatory compliance and marketing of collective investment schemes.

Jeremy heads the retail funds team and oversees a significant platform of retail funds offered by both international and local fund management organisations.

Brian McDermott

Brian McDermott is Head of the A&L Goodbody Asset Management & Investment Funds Group. He has extensive experience in the structuring, establishment and authorisation of all types of investment funds including UCITS, AIFs and non-regulated funds.

In addition to advising the promoters and investment managers of such funds, he advises fund investors, fund directors and fund service providers on relevant Irish law, regulation and market practice.

Chris Cummings

Chris Cummings is the Chief Executive of The Investment Association, a post he has held since September 2016. The Investment Association is the trade body that represents UK-based investment managers.

He is a member of HM Treasury’s Asset Management Taskforce, and was a founding member of its Financial Services Trade & Investment Board. He serves on the Chancellor’s Financial Services Industry Advisory Group and Department for International Trade’s Financial Services Trade Advisory Group. He is a Board member on EFAMA, the European trade association for investment management and is a member of the Regulation Committee of IIFA, the international association for investment management.

He was previously a member of the Financial Conduct Authority’s Regulatory Decisions Committee, a Settlement Decision Maker for the Payment Services Regulator. He served on the Foreign & Commonwealth’s Diplomatic Excellence Panel.

Before joining The Investment Association he was the founding CEO of TheCityUK, held senior posts in banking, insurance and consulting with major global firms. He is a regular columnist, commentator and speaker on issues of international competitiveness and regulation in financial services.

Diana Imbach Haumüller

She is a Swiss Lawyer specialised in financial services law and compliance matters. Diana has been working for several years as an attorney at law in international law firms in Switzerland and Australia (2006-2012). Before joining SFAMA, which was renamed Asset Management Association Switzerland on 25 September 2020, Diana has been working for the State Secretariat for International Financial Matters SIF (2012-2014). Diana holds an LL.M from the University of Sydney, Australia and a doctorate in law from the University of Zürich.

Pat Lardner

Pat Lardner joined Irish Funds as Chief Executive in April 2012. He has over twenty-five years’ experience in the global asset management industry and has held executive/leadership positions in Ireland and overseas with firms managing a broad range of both traditional and alternative investment strategies. Pat is an active participant on all significant Government sponsored groups relating to funds in Ireland, is a member of the Board of the European Fund and Asset Management Association and is an Advisor to the Asset Management Association of China’s International Partners Committee. He is a past Council Member of the Irish Association of Pension Funds and a former Director of both the Irish Association of Investment Managers and the International Investment Funds Association. He attained honours undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from University College Dublin.

Graham Bryant

Graham Bryant is Counsel in ISDA’s London office, working on a number of legal issues across a range of areas including interest rate and commodities products, collateral and general regulatory matters. Prior to joining ISDA in July 2017, he worked at two international law firms and undertook a secondment at a European investment bank, with a focus on derivatives, structured finance and debt capital markets transactions.

Simon Firth

Simon is a leading authority on derivatives, specialising in the structuring and documentation of derivatives transactions and advising about issues arising in relation to derivatives and the financial markets generally.

Work highlights

Simon led the team advising the English administrators of the Lehman Brothers companies on their derivatives, repo and stock lending positions and has been involved in some of the market’s most significant cases involving derivatives. These include:

Lomas v JFB Firth Rixson, Inc., the leading case on the ISDA Master Agreement; and

Re Lehman Brothers International (Europe) (No.6), which established a number of important principles regarding the close-out provisions of the ISDA Master Agreement

He often advises market participants about issues arising in the credit derivatives market and was heavily involved in recent decisions of the ISDA Credit Derivatives Determinations Committee involving Novo Banco and iHeart Communications.

Currently, he is actively advising a range of financial institutions about the impact of the new margin rules for non-centrally cleared OTC derivatives transactions.

Justin Storms

Justin Storms is a corporate partner based in the New York office and a member of the firm’s Investment Management Group. Mr. Storms represents clients in a wide range of activities in the private alternative investment space, including the organization of traditional private investment funds and co-investment structures, the establishment of bespoke separately managed accounts and platforms, the development of “house” governance and compensation structures, and select representations of institutional investors. Mr. Storms’ recent experience includes acting for clients such as KKR, The Carlyle Group and HarbourVest Partners, among others. Mr. Storms is recognized as a leading individual for private equity funds by Chambers Global (2020) and Chambers USA (2020), and is also recognized by The Legal 500 US (2020).

Jason Carss

Jason is a Managing Director and General Counsel of Investment Management at KKR, focusing on capital raising and operations for the firm’s global platform of funds and products. He joined KKR in 2008 after working in the Investment Management Group of Linklaters LLP. While at Linklaters, he represented a number of alternative asset managers, including KKR, in connection with structuring, raising, and operating investment funds. He holds a B.A. from Columbia University and a J.D. from Fordham Law School.

Andrew I Chizzik

Andrew Chizzik, a partner in Weil’s Private Funds practice, has extensive experience representing U.S. and non-U.S. private investment fund sponsors in structuring and negotiating the terms of domestic and offshore private investment funds. Mr. Chizzik represents certain prominent limited partners in connection with their investments in private equity funds, real estate funds and venture capital funds, as well as buyers and sellers of secondary interests in private equity funds. He also advises fund sponsors generally with respect to the Federal securities laws, including the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. Matt Keogh

Matt Keogh is the Global Head of Linklaters’ Investment Funds practice, which in the last 12 months has represented top tier sponsors raising more than US$62bn and acted for investors committing more than US$20bn to over 148 private funds and co-investments. Matt acts for a range of leading sponsors and institutional cornerstone investors. His experience covers the structuring and management of funds and managed accounts investing in illiquid assets, particularly in real estate, private equity, infrastructure and credit. He also has experience in private equity style joint ventures, fund finance, asset management M&A and secondary disposal of fund interests. He is ranked in Chambers and Legal 500.

Michael Tannenbaum
