The IBA basics on arbitration

Mark Hsu is a partner in the New York City office of Hawkins Parnell & Young, where he represents domestic and international clients in product liability, toxic tort cases, commercial disputes, employment matters and insurance coverage litigation. He also operates as outside general counsel for startup companies – not simply providing legal services, but also serving as an advisor and primary point of contact on virtually all of the legal issues that these businesses face. A litigator for more than twenty years, Mark has practiced extensively in state and federal court and is actively involved in all phases from inception of the case through trial and appeal. Mark takes on every matter with a conscientious and versatile approach, whether it’s as national counsel conducting investigations and developing litigation strategies for Fortune 500 companies or providing risk management advice for mom-and-pop businesses. In the area of product liability, he is particularly experienced in managing and litigating asbestos cases. As national coordinating counsel for several manufacturing and premises defendants, he has helped develop and coordinate the defense of tens of thousands of cases around the country.

Carlos E. Martínez Betanzos is the IBA's Young Lawyers' Committee National Representative in Mexico. He is a Partner and head of the Litigation and Arbitration practice at Basham, Ringe y Correa, S.C. in Mexico City. Carlos helps clients with matters in both civil and common law legal traditions and cultures. He focuses his practice on major international arbitrations (commercial and investor-state), cross-border litigation proceedings, as well as public international law matters. Mr. Martínez also counsels clients in connection with anticorruption regulations, compliance programs and investigations in Latin America. Mr. Martínez completed his Master of Laws at NYU School of Law in 2008 and obtained his law degree (JD) from ITAM in Mexico City.

Julio Rivera Rios is a member of the International Dispute Resolution Group, where he focuses on international commercial and investment arbitration. Mr. Rivera Rios has represented private clients and States across multiple jurisdictions in arbitrations governed by various substantive laws and conducted under the rules of the ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and LCIA. He has recently represented clients in disputes concerning the impositions of tax measures, breach of mining investment agreements and nonpayment of sovereign debt. Select representations include Freeport-McMoRan in an ICSID arbitration brought against the Government of Peru with claims in excess of US$1 billion; a leading global engineering and project management company in an UNCITRAL arbitration arising out of the construction of a multibillion dollar LNG plant; and Gramercy in an UNCITRAL arbitration against the Government of Peru related to Agrarian Reform Bonds. Mr. Rivera Rios is a member of the International Bar Association’s under-40 arbitration sub-committee. He is also recognized by Who’s Who Legal (2022) as a Future Leader in international arbitration. Mr. Rivera Rios’s publications include “Reparation,” Jus Mundi Wiki Notes; “Reclamo de daños bajo el T-MEC” [Claiming damages under the USMCA], with Dietmar W. Prager and Ina C. Popova, Reforma; “Empresas, ejecutivos y leyes anticorrupción” [Companies, executives, and anti-corruption laws], with Daniel Aun, Reforma; and “Aligning Judicial Accountability in Mexico with International Standards,” Harvard International Law Journal. Prior to joining Debevoise in 2018, Mr. Rivera Rios practiced with a litigation boutique in Mexico City, and an international law firm in New York. Mr. Rivera Rios was also a visiting attorney at an international Japanese law firm in Tokyo. Mr. Rivera Rios holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, where he was feature editor and writer of the Harvard International Law Journal and the recipient of a full scholarship granted by the Mexican Government in recognition of his professional and academic merits. He graduated summa cum laude from the Escuela Libre de Derecho in Mexico City, where he was feature editor and writer of the Escuela Libre de Derecho Law Review. Mr. Rivera Rios is admitted to practice law in New York and Mexico. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
